Local Note:University of Chicago Library's Lincoln copy's title page wanting. In slide case. Supposed to have been owned by Abraham Lincoln. Has bound in a typewritten sheet, signed by William E. Barton, that reads: "This dictionary, published in 1831, was the property of Abraham Lincoln. It belongs in the collection of Dr. J. B. English, from whom it was purchased by John E. Barton. It was reserved from the Burton sale, and remained in his possession until it was purchased by me, May 26, 1919. Lincoln was in Chicago in late March and the first part of April 1860, engaged in the trial of the "Sand-bar Case." It would appear that he expected to be doing some writing that might make the use of a dictionary a convenience, and that he brought this with him. It was left in the Confectionary Store of Tassman and Hautman, Corner State and Adams." The inside of the back cover is inscribed by John E. Burton: "This dictionary was in the collection of Dr. J. B. English, who married into the Holman and Herndon family and had unusual opportunities for securing Lincoln items and hence his collection contained many oddities. 1910."
