A work of monumental proportions made possible by the collaboration of the Great Plains Flora Association, which consists of thirteen botanical scholars from Great Plains universities and one from the New York Botanical Garden. The volume covers all the vascular plants known to occur spontaneously in the Great Plains. The body of the work consists of systematic descriptions of species (no pictures), but it also contains an introduction to the area, abbreviations, the necessary keys, nomenclatural authorities, glossary, and index of Latin and common names. This work will be the authority for Great Plains vascular plants since there is no comparable book. P.A. Rydberg's Flora of the Prairies and Plains of Central North America (1932) is not complete and Atlas of the Flora of the Great PlainsT1] (1977), the initial collaboration of the Great Plains Flora Association, consists of distribution maps of the vascular plants of the Great Plains. This new work is recommended for all academic botany collections, particularly those in the US Midwest.-E.L. Williams, Vassar College
