Summary:Providing a comprehensive overview, this text includes practical, clinically relevant coverage of complementary and alternative medicine, with commentary by well-known experts, descriptions of recent medical advances, case studies, and the history and philosophy of each discipline, along with indications, contraindications, practical application, and clinical trials for each topic. Research is critically reviewed, with examples of exceptional and flawed studies. You'll gain an understanding of the most commonly used alternative therapies, as well as those most likely to be integrated with conventional medical treatment.

This is a very fine, extremely well-referenced third edition of a textbook that is strongly suggested as supplemental reading for global health, physical education, or nursing courses. It includes four new chapters on Reiki, measurement of the human biofield, aromatherapy and essential oils, and the future of ethnomedicine. Photographs largely replace illustrations of experts and people drawings in case studies and figures; summary tables list outcomes of important clinical trials; a few new expert contributors have been added or substituted. This edition features boxes of "points to ponder," and it updates references to include material from 2001-07. Among the practical features retained are chapter objectives and review; anatomical drawings; matching terms and definitions; multiple choice, short answer, and critical thinking questions; and expert Q&A. The broad range of timely topics covered includes psychoneuroimmunology, stress management, relaxation, meditation, biofeedback, hypnosis, mental imagery, chiropractic methods, acupressure and acupuncture, homeopathy, therapeutic touch and massage, caregiving, exercise physiology, spirituality, and herbs. Appendixes feature answers to multiple choice and matching questions, and organization/association addresses and phone numbers but no Web sites. The index has page references for names and subjects, and identifies figures, tables, and boxes. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-level undergraduates and above. E. R.
