Wall's book is a worthy addition to an excellent series of monographs on chromatography. Wall (VWR International) aims the book at practicing chromatographers as well as scientists contemplating using this technique for the first time. He attempts to bring the reader up to date on developments in the field over the past 20 to 30 years. He succeeds on all fronts. This is a very readable, concise treatment of TLC--and not your father's TLC. There have been a great many advances in this field, and the author covers them well. The book is logically arranged; the first few chapters cover history and development and then sorbents, samples, development, and detection. Chapter 7 treats quantitative analysis by TLC (yes, it is possible) and video imaging of TLC plates. The last chapter covers hyphenated TLC techniques including TLC-HPLC (high performance liquid chromatography), TLC-MS (mass spectrometry), and TLC coupled with FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) and Raman spectroscopy. This book is highly recommended, especially to scientists who have wanted to try TLC but did not know its capabilities or how far it has advanced. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
