Leopoldo Alas y Urena, critic, satirist, novelist, and short story writer, was better known by his pseudonym Clarin. This is the first supplement to Valis's Leopoldo Alas (Clarin): An Annotated Bibliography (1986) and follows the organization of that volume. It includes anthologies, selections, Alas's criticism, novels, short stories, correspondence, prologues, reprints, and translations, most published since 1984 (with some pre-1984 items). The "Miscellaneous" subsection has two new categories: autograph manuscripts and iconography (Alas appeared on a banknote and a postage stamp) and one musical entry. Different editions of the same work are given in chronological order by date of publication. Part B lists secondary sources, with publishing dates from Clarin's time to the present, arranged alphabetically by author, with anonymous articles last. The most similar recent work is David Torres's Studies on Clarin (CH, Dec'87), which covers works published up to 1986. Although thorough, it has only 1,128 entries, while Valis's supplement has more than 1,700. An excellent research tool. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Four-year colleges and above. M. S.
