An anthology about macromarine ecosystems, this book deals with the conservation and management of these vitally important components of the ecosphere. The 18 papers are grouped into three parts, each with from five to seven papers. The part on perturbations and yields deals with the effects by either natural or controlled manipulations, on biomass yields of large ecosystems. Part 2 is concerned with biodynamics such as feeding patterns, growth, survival, and general well-being of marine organisms. The last part deals with the management of large marine ecosystems considering natural processes, varying productivity scales, and techniques of management. It is authoratively but technically written, global in scope, and the third in the AAAS series about large marine ecosystems. Each paper contains numerous graphic and tabular materials, and the usefulness of each is enhanced by a fairly comprehensive list of references. It will be indispensable for libraries serving graduate programs in marine ecology, marine biology, and/or oceanography. -P. E. Lutz, University of North Carolina at Greensboro
