Summary:Phenomena such as near-death and out-of-body experiences have often been ignored or ridiculed by mainstream psychology. In this volume, leading scholars explore these areas, as well as experiences of hallucinations, lucid dreams, alien abductions, mysticism, anomalous healings, psi events, and past lives, in an effort to explain the totality of human experience. In an accessible style, contributors review and discuss current research about unusual but important events, creating a mesmerizing account of activity at the boundaries of conventional psychology. The contributors examine current research and theories, methodological issues, related psychopathology, individual and cultural differences, aftereffects, and clinical implications of anomalous experiences. Carde~na, Lynn, and Krippner present an extensively documented collection of information regarding uncommon psychological experiences that are not necessarily pathological. Although it focuses on "experiences, not on testing the consensual validity of such experience," the volume is a detailed presentation of a vast array of studies covering hallucinations; synesthesia; lucid dreaming; out-of-body experiences; psi-related experiences; alien abduction; and past-life, near-death, healing, and mystical experiences. The editors believe the time has come for psychologists and other social scientists to give such experiences serious consideration and to integrate them into theory, research, and clinical practices. This compiled research takes a large step toward that goal. Written by international authorities, the chapters are scholarly and dense, presenting an abundance of specific studies and references. An extremely valuable addition to any academic psychology collection and an excellent accompanying volume to abnormal psychology texts. Upper-division undergraduates through professionals. J. Bailey; Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute
